How much should you charge for a sublimation mug?
The useful answer starts with the mug you are actually producing. A basic ceramic blank, a premium coated blank, a gift box and a customer-supplied mug do not share the same cost. Your price also needs to pay for setup, pressing, cooling, packing and the occasional failed transfer.
Mug cost is not the same as the selling price

Ink yield is an input to measure, not a universal printer constant. Epson’s SureColor F170 specifications, for example, state that yield varies with images, settings, paper and operating conditions. Use the shop’s observed record when available and label an interim value as an assumption.

The examples below use $2.30 of materials and packaging per attempt, an 8% expected failure rate, 10 minutes of batch setup, 5 active minutes per mug, a $24 hourly labor input and $6 of equipment and overhead per batch. The selling model uses a 45% target margin, a 6.5% variable fee and a $0.20 fixed order fee.

For 12 mugs, failure-adjusted materials are $2.30 ÷ 0.92 × 12 = $30.00. Labor is (10 + 5 × 12) ÷ 60 × $24 = $28.00. Adding $6.00 of equipment and overhead produces the $64.00 batch cost. Required revenue is ($64.00 + $0.20) ÷ (1 − 0.45 − 0.065) = $132.37.
These are reproducible teaching inputs, not supplier quotes or market averages. A one-off mug is expensive because setup and batch support cost are concentrated in one unit. A larger batch lowers those allocations per mug only when the workflow actually becomes more efficient.

Charge enough to cover the failure-adjusted mug, transfer, labor, equipment, overhead, packaging and selling fees, then apply the intended profit target. The example above produces $11.03 per mug for 12 identical mugs, but the user’s own inputs should replace every example value.
How do I calculate the true cost of one mug?
Start with the landed blank and consumables, divide failure-exposed materials by the expected good rate, and add setup labor, active unit labor, equipment, overhead and absorbed fulfillment. Keep batch costs separate until the final per-unit division.
When is a bulk mug discount safe?
A discount is supported when a larger quantity produces a documented saving, such as lower landed blank cost or less setup time per mug. Recalculate the complete batch instead of applying an automatic percentage reduction.
When to change the price
